Navigating the Royal Adelaide Show: A Guide for Families of Children with Support Needs

Updated: Sep 17, 2024

The Royal Adelaide Show is a cherished event, but for families of children with support needs, it can be overwhelming. This guide is designed to help you plan your visit, taking into account the new inclusive measures and sharing tips from families who have successfully navigated the show in the past.

Sensory-Friendly Features:

This year, the Royal Adelaide Show has introduced several features to make the event more inclusive:

  • Sensory/Quiet Hours: On the first Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the show, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, carnival operators will turn off music, strobe lights, and other sensory triggers to create a calmer environment.

  • Communication Boards: Available at all kiosks and the show office, these boards were created in consultation with Autism SA therapists to support individuals who are non-verbal or communicate differently.

  • Wheelchair-Accessible Ferris Wheel: The new 35m Crown Wheel offers enclosed gondolas that are wheelchair accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the panoramic views.

  • SACARE Carer’s Lounge: A respite space located near the Vili’s Dog Pavilion, offering a specialised accessible bathroom facility with a height-adjustable change table, hoist, and modern conveniences for both carers and individuals with disabilities.

Planning Ahead: Community Tips:

We asked families in our community to share their strategies for making the most of their visit to the Royal Adelaide Show, and here’s what they recommend:

  • Plan a Route: One family suggests planning and following a particular route, they focus on one ride for the child, one for the family, then plan breaks for food and showbags before heading home.

  • Enter Through Quieter Areas: Another family recommends entering from the Leader Street gate near the farm and animal areas. It’s quieter and allows children to gradually adjust to the environment before moving on to the busier areas.

  • Visit on the Last Day: Some families have found that attending on the last day of the show is quieter and less overwhelming.

  • Bring Headphones: Many parents suggest bringing noise-cancelling headphones to help their children manage the noise levels, making the experience more enjoyable.

Accessibility and Parenting Facilities: The Royal Adelaide Show has made thoughtful provisions for families needing accessible and parenting facilities:
